Vietnam Unveils Its Largest Bulk Carrier Yet

Vietnam recently celebrated a significant milestone in its maritime industry with the handover of the Truong Minh Dream, the largest dry bulk carrier ever constructed in a domestic shipyard. This 65,000 deadweight ton (dwt) vessel is a vital component of the government’s strategy to enhance shipbuilding and shipping capabilities and stimulate economic growth in the country.

Measuring 656 feet (approximately 200 meters), the Truong Minh Dream meets international standards as classified by Japan’s ClassNK, confirming its readiness for global operations. It was collaboratively designed by Vietnam Shipbuilding Engineering JSC (VISEC) and Bluetech Finland. The vessel features a double-bottom, single-propeller configuration with five cargo holds, hydraulic double-sided hatch covers, and four cranes capable of lifting 30 tons each. Although it adheres to standard bulk carrier specifications, it significantly surpasses the size of previously built vessels in Vietnam. The main engine design is licensed from MAN and fabricated in Japan, ensuring reliability and efficiency.

Construction of the Truong Minh Dream was carried out by the Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Company, which is part of the larger Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC). Despite SBIC undergoing a state-run reorganization process, the project proceeded without major issues, with the vessel launched on May 11 and successfully completing sea trials by December 4. The government, particularly through the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of National Defense, is overseeing SBIC’s transformation, aiming to improve the local shipbuilding industry’s capacity and competitiveness. A plan for this optimization is expected to be submitted to the Prime Minister for approval in the first quarter of 2025.

Following the handover on December 26, the Truong Minh Dream was entrusted to Dong Bac Shipbuilding Industry JSC for operational management. The company had initially ordered two vessels of this class, with construction of the second bulk carrier commencing after the Truong Minh Dream’s launch. The new vessel will operate from the northern port city of Hai Phong, further integrated into Vietnam’s growing maritime infrastructure.

During the handover ceremony, it was announced that Dong Bac had placed an additional order for two more vessels of the same class. Government officials expressed optimism about these developments, indicating that they align with national strategies for advancing Vietnam’s maritime economy. The expansion of the shipbuilding sector is aimed at providing a cost-efficient alternative amidst stiff competition from traditional shipbuilding nations like China, Japan, and South Korea.

In summary, the successful launch and handover of the Truong Minh Dream not only marks a milestone in Vietnam’s shipbuilding capabilities but also reflects the government’s broader ambitions to develop its maritime economy and competitiveness on the global stage.
