Vietnam Maritime Corporation Celebrates 30 Years and Second-Class Labor Medal
On May 10, 2025, Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC), formerly known as Vinalines, celebrated its 30th anniversary and was awarded the Second-Class Labor Medal in recognition of its significant contributions to Vietnam’s maritime industry. The event, held at the National Convention Center, was attended by high-ranking officials from the Vietnamese government, the Ministry of Finance, strategic partners, customers, and VIMC employees.
Background and Growth
Founded on April 29, 1995, VIMC emerged from the restructuring of various shipping and maritime service enterprises, initially possessing a modest charter capital of less than VND 1,500 billion and a fleet of 49 vessels. Over the years, VIMC has transformed from this humble beginning into a powerhouse in Vietnam’s maritime landscape, peaking with a fleet of 159 vessels and a total capacity of nearly 3.5 million DWT, representing 45% of the nation’s total tonnage.
The global financial crisis in 2008 threatened to destabilize VIMC, pushing it to the brink of bankruptcy. However, with strategic government support, VIMC implemented transformative measures that focused on restructuring and modernizing its operations. These included focusing on three core areas: port operation, shipping, and maritime services, alongside divesting from unprofitable entities.
Remarkable Recovery
VIMC’s recovery has been impressive. From facing an equity deficit of (USD 180 million) VND 4,600 billion, the corporation’s equity capital surged to (USD 900 million) VND 17,000 billion, and it is now a publicly listed entity with a market capitalization exceeding (USD 4 billion) VND 100,000 billion. VIMC now operates over 16 key seaports, handling roughly 30% of Vietnam’s total cargo throughput, and has been actively investing in major deep-sea ports like Cai Mep – Thi Vai and Can Gio International Hub Port to bolster Vietnam’s global maritime positioning.
30th Anniversary Ceremony Highlights
During the anniversary event, VIMC’s Chairman, Le Anh Son, underscored the significance of the Second-Class Labor Medal as both an honor and motivation for the corporation’s workforce. He emphasized VIMC’s commitment to expanding operations, enhancing competitiveness, and contributing significantly to Vietnam’s economy.
Vision for Sustainable Development
Looking ahead, VIMC aims to optimize port operations, expand logistics services, and modernize its fleet with eco-friendly vessels. Collaborating with global shipping entities, VIMC is developing an integrated logistics system connecting inland logistics centers to deep-water ports, thereby reducing environmental emissions and alleviating road transport burdens.
Digital transformation also plays a crucial role in VIMC’s strategy. By incorporating artificial intelligence and big data into its operations, VIMC intends to reduce costs, enhance efficiency, and minimize its environmental impact while driving sustainable growth.
Future Prospects
As a flagship enterprise in Vietnam’s maritime sector, VIMC is committed to fostering economic growth, facilitating international trade, and enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnam’s port system. With a focus on sustainable development and adherence to global standards, VIMC continues to strengthen its position in the maritime industry and move toward deeper global integration.
The corporation’s journey over the past three decades is one of resilience, innovation, and ambition. As VIMC celebrates this significant milestone, it reaffirms its commitment to becoming a leading maritime corporation in the region, setting the stage for continued advancement and sustainable development.
