W.R. Davis Engineering Limited Secures Major Contract with Irving Shipbuilding for River-Class Destroyers
In a significant development for Canada’s defense sector, Irving Shipbuilding has awarded a contract exceeding $30 million to Ottawa-based W.R. Davis Engineering Limited. This contract includes the design and implementation of the full engine intake and exhaust system as well as infrared suppression devices for the exhaust, marking an important step towards supporting the construction of the future Canadian Surface Combatants, now called River-class destroyers, for the Royal Canadian Navy.
The role of the engine intake and exhaust systems is critical, as they facilitate the airflow needed for the ship’s engines and manage the exhaust gases produced. The infrared suppression devices play a vital role in enhancing the ship’s stealth capabilities by cooling the engine exhaust and hot surfaces, thus significantly reducing the ship’s infrared signature. This capability is crucial for defending against heat-seeking anti-ship missiles, making the ship less detectable to potential threats.
This collaboration is part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), which aims to revitalize the country’s naval fleet. Irving Shipbuilding plans to construct a total of 15 River-class destroyers, with the production test module for the first ships having commenced in June 2024. The first three ships will be designated His Majesty’s Canadian Ships (HMCS) Fraser, Saint-Laurent, and Mackenzie.
