The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation is actively investing in maritime diplomacy by training sailors from 13 countries in West and Central Africa. This initiative, led by Djarot Tri Wardhono, the Head of the Transportation Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDMP), aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to enhancing its role within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) through Triangular Cooperation, as agreed during IMO forums.
The training program is designed to adhere to IMO standards and includes the Training of Trainers (ToT) and Training of Examiners (ToE) modules. This is aimed at equipping professional instructors and examiners in the global maritime sector. Participants hail from countries such as Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Cameroon, Angola, Congo Brazzaville, Gabon, Liberia, and Senegal, totaling 84 selected sailors.
With a funding allocation of Rp18.2 billion (approximately US$1.1 million) provided by the Ministry of Finance’s International Development Cooperation Fund (LDKPI), Indonesia is set to conduct two training sessions leading up to 2025. Wardhono expressed gratitude towards the Ministry of Finance for supporting this training, which is pivotal for expanding Indonesia’s diplomatic reach.
The broader aim of the initiative is to bolster Indonesia’s position as a Category C member of the IMO Council and to forge stronger ties with African nations. By enhancing technical collaboration, the training is expected to open new business opportunities for Indonesia’s shipping and maritime technology sectors in Africa. Wardhono emphasized that nurturing political engagement with African countries is crucial for garnering their support within the IMO.
The anticipated success of this training program not only aims to foster collaboration in maritime human resource development but also enhances Indonesia’s strategic role in the IMO international forum. Economically, it is projected to solidify Indonesia’s presence as an IMO member and raise the competency levels in maritime education, ultimately benefiting seafarers and professionals in the industry.
In essence, this training initiative reflects Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening its global maritime diplomacy while simultaneously addressing local economic interests, thereby enhancing both international collaboration and national maritime capabilities.
