According to Vijay D. Chafekar, Executive Director of the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC), the uptick in incidents is largely attributed to minor thefts rather than a heightened threat to shipping activities. Notably, there were no serious Category 1 incidents reported in the region during this period, indicating that the overall security environment, while challenging, has not escalated to more severe levels.
Chafekar emphasized that the increase in sea robbery incidents serves as a reminder of the persistent security challenges faced by vessels operating in this critical maritime corridor. However, he also highlighted a positive trend: following the arrest of individuals involved in these petty thefts by the Riau Islands Regional Police, there has been a notable decline in incident reports. This illustrates the effectiveness of proactive law enforcement in deterring maritime crime.
To further diminish the incidence of theft and unauthorized boarding, the ReCAAP ISC advocates for increased diligence among shipping companies. They encourage operators to report all theft and boarding incidents to the appropriate coastal state authorities. This reporting is crucial for law enforcement to take prompt action against perpetrators. Furthermore, the ReCAAP ISC suggests that shipping companies should collect and provide CCTV footage or other evidence when reporting incidents, as this can significantly aid in the swift arrest and prosecution of suspects.
