On July 17, 2025, Wärtsilä Corporation inaugurated a cutting-edge simulation suite at Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM), significantly enhancing maritime training in the region. ALAM, part of the MISC Group, is dedicated to educating the next generation of seafarers and will now utilize Wärtsilä’s advanced dual-fuel simulator technology, which incorporates virtual reality to create immersive training environments. This suite supports future-oriented education, including training for sustainable fuels like methanol and ammonia, crucial for the industry’s shift towards decarbonization.
During the event, ALAM was recognized as the first member of Wärtsilä’s “Maritime Advancement in Simulation, Technology and R&D Services” (MASTERS) program in the Asia Pacific region. This program aims to establish strategic partnerships with leading maritime training and research organizations that actively utilize Wärtsilä’s simulation technologies and are committed to improving maritime education. Ts. Dr. Captain Manivannan Subramaniam, ALAM’s Chief Executive, underscored the center’s ambition to nurture future-ready seafarers through hands-on training aligned with global standards.
The simulation suite includes state-of-the-art technical simulators for both engine room and cargo handling training. Features such as a full-mission bridge with 270-degree visualization, dynamic positioning, and extended reality (XR) capabilities allow for comprehensive navigation training. Additional resources include GMDSS and ECDIS classroom simulators, reinforced by cloud-based solutions for blended learning experiences.
Neil Bennett, General Manager of Simulation & Training at Wärtsilä Marine, emphasized the significance of this technology in providing students with vital skills for operating highly automated vessels. He praised ALAM for its dedication to enhancing maritime training standards and welcomed its participation in the MASTERS program, which aligns with global safety, optimization, digitalization, and decarbonization efforts in maritime education.
Founded in 1976, ALAM has trained over 15,000 professionals in maritime operations, positioned strategically in Melaka, Malaysia, with a view of the busy Straits of Malacca. The partnership between Wärtsilä and ALAM began in 2006, highlighting a long-standing commitment to maritime education.
