The Marino World Manning Expo and Conference (MWMEC), set to take place from September 29 to October 1 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, is expected to showcase thousands of job opportunities for Filipino marine professionals. This event highlights the increasing global demand for Filipino seafarers, who constitute approximately 25% of the world’s 1.9 million maritime workforce. Industry analysts predict a need for over 90,000 additional maritime officers by 2026, positioning Filipino mariners as key players in filling this gap due to their technical skills, English proficiency, and adaptability.
The theme for this year’s expo is “Shaping the Future of Filipino Seafarers for Sustainable Shipping.” Prominent manning agencies and shipping companies, including Pacific Ocean Manning, North Sea Marine Services, Kestrel Shipping, and Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, among others, will participate, offering various vacancies from entry-level positions to senior roles.
Beyond recruitment, the MWMEC aims to address broader challenges facing the shipping sector, such as compliance with environmental regulations, the integration of digital technologies and AI, and the need for crew retraining in a decarbonizing industry. Key discussions will touch on crew retention, welfare issues, the proposed Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, and on-board connectivity and mental health concerns.
The expo will also leverage innovative technology by implementing Quanby Solutions’ facial recognition system for streamlined attendee registration, reflecting a focus on efficiency and modernization. With Filipino seafarers contributing significantly to the economy through remittances, the MWMEC is strategically positioned to reinforce the country’s competitive advantage in global shipping while equipping its workforce for future challenges.
