From August 17 to 31, 2023, the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA) in the Philippines hosted an international maritime student exchange program. This initiative brought together 29 students from several prestigious Japanese maritime institutions, including Kobe University, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Nagasaki University, and various National Colleges of Technology. This program, launched in 2015, has now seen seven iterations, aiming to foster international mindsets and cross-cultural networks among future seafarers.
During the exchange, Japanese students spent a week at NTMA, interacting with their Filipino counterparts through lectures, practical training, and cultural activities. The curriculum included hands-on exercises using Japanese coastal charts, welding practice, and operating machinery through an engine simulator, enhancing their technical skills in a collaborative environment. The program also included visits to the NYK-Fil Maritime E-Training Inc. facility and a sightseeing tour in Tagaytay City, emphasizing both learning and cultural immersion.
The exchange encouraged students to present cultural stories through a “kobanashi” show, promoting mutual understanding by humorously showcasing their respective cultures. Responses from participants reflect the positive impact of the program. Japanese students appreciated the enthusiasm and initiative shown by their Filipino peers, noting this experience reinforced their ambition to work in international maritime settings. Likewise, NTMA students valued the opportunity for cultural discovery and personal growth, resulting in lasting friendships and improved communication skills.
Jan Soledad Asuncion, NTMA President, highlighted the program’s role in strengthening cooperation between Japan and the Philippines, asserting its importance in cultivating the next generation of maritime leaders. Through such exchanges, NYK continues its commitment to collaborate with educational institutions globally, promoting the future development of the maritime industry. The program aligns with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing educational advancement and cross-cultural collaboration.
This exchange not only prepares students for their maritime careers but also fosters global relationships and cultural appreciation essential in today’s interconnected world.
