The South African National Department of Transport has launched a competition aimed at maritime companies and design academies in conjunction with the upcoming World Maritime Day event. This initiative was announced during the Comprehensive Maritime Transport Policy (CMTP) Midterm Review and seeks to highlight the significance of the maritime value chain.
Competition Overview
Participants are encouraged to engage in a transparent value chain analysis to demonstrate business activities that add value throughout the maritime project cycle. To qualify for the competition, projects must meet specific criteria: they need to be existing or planned, fully funded, aligned with the Comprehensive Maritime Transport Policy, and adhere to the 2022 International Maritime Organization (IMO) theme for World Maritime Day, “New technologies for greener shipping.”
The winning CEO will receive a prestigious opportunity to engage directly with the IMO Secretary-General during a parallel event in South Africa.
Design Trophy Competition
In addition to the maritime projects, there is a separate contest for designing a trophy or statue, targeted at design academies and schools. The design must be an original creation that uses recycled materials sourced from marine craft and symbolizes the 2022 CMTP Decade theme. The scale of the artwork is essential, and maritime businesses are encouraged to contribute donations for this purpose.
The winning design will be unveiled by President Cyril Ramaphosa alongside the IMO Secretary-General during the World Maritime Day event in Durban later this year.

- Submission of concept and methodology: June 1, 2022.
- Submission of value chain analysis report: August 1, 2022.
- Adjudication: September 15, 2022.
The competition officially closed on May 16, 2022. Participants who are interested must have submitted their Declaration of Interest forms via email to cmpt2022@dot.gov.za, with further inquiries directed to Dumisani Ntuli at ntulid@dot.gov.za.
