Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated India’s first Maritime Simulation Centre at AMET Knowledge Park, Thenpattinam, near Chennai. This groundbreaking facility, established through a partnership between the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and A.P. Moller-Maersk, aims to enhance maritime training for future seafarers.
The centre is equipped with advanced technologies, including Full Mission Simulators for deck and engine operations, as well as Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) labs. These tools will provide cadets with immersive training experiences in critical skills such as watchkeeping, collision avoidance, navigation, and engine troubleshooting.
With an investment of INR 13.5 Crore, partially funded by the A.P. Moller Foundation, which contributed approximately INR 6.5 Crore, the centre represents over 25 years of collaboration between AMET and Maersk. Both organizations are committed to nurturing India’s maritime talent, and the new centre aims to equip young professionals with the necessary skills to excel in the global shipping industry.
Dr. J. Ramachandran, Founder and Chancellor of AMET University, emphasized that the centre signifies AMET’s dedication to producing world-class maritime professionals. He highlighted the institution’s evolution from a small educational establishment to a globally recognized maritime education hub. Similarly, Ms. Nynne Norman Scheuer of Maersk noted that the partnership reflects their commitment to career development and bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world maritime applications.
The Maritime Simulation Centre offers cadets a controlled environment to engage in realistic maritime scenarios, significantly preparing them for actual sea operations. This initiative not only bolsters AMET’s status as India’s prime maritime education institution but also signifies a successful partnership with Maersk in shaping the future of seafaring.
