The Philippine Coast Guard successfully rescued 14 crewmembers from the Manfel V, a grounded dry mini bulker, near Lubang Island in the western Philippines. The vessel, operated by Manfel Cargo Shipping—a company established in 2015 for local cargo services—had departed Subic City and was en route to Bauan in Batangas when it encountered engine problems on February 25. After drifting overnight due to engine failure, the ship was driven ashore by strong waves about 360 feet from a rural area called Barangay Maligaya.
Rescue attempts on February 26 were thwarted by high seas, rendering Search and Rescue (SAR) teams unable to approach the vessel. However, the situation improved the following morning. On February 27, the waves calmed sufficiently to allow rescuers to implement a human chain and a safety line. This enabled the safe evacuation of all 14 crewmembers, who were helped down a ladder and guided through the surf to shore.
Once ashore, the crew underwent health checks and were transported to a nearby town for further assistance. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard is continuing to monitor the Manfel V, which still contains over 1,900 liters of fuel. Officials are planning to inspect the vessel for any breaches or signs of damage that could potentially lead to an oil spill.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by maritime operations in the region, particularly during adverse weather conditions, and underscores the importance of swift rescue coordination. The Coast Guard’s effective response not only ensured the crew’s safety but also prioritized environmental safeguards in the aftermath of the grounding.
