BAE Systems Maritime Australia has awarded Ultra Maritime a significant contract to supply its Surface Ship Torpedo Defence (SSTD) system for the Hunter class frigates. This advanced technology will equip each frigate with robust defenses against torpedo threats by utilizing sophisticated acoustic detection methods integrated with effective countermeasures. The introduction of this system is crucial for enhancing the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the fleet and ensuring the protection of Australia’s maritime interests.
The SSTD system is designed to identify acoustic signatures from torpedoes and provide strategic advice on evasive maneuvers, such as zig-zags or hard turns, to effectively neutralize threats. This capability is augmented by the system’s incorporation of sonar technology and dual decoy methods. Ultra Maritime, based in Mawson Lakes, South Australia, is already committed to delivering the Bow Sonar for the Hunter Class Frigate Program, which employs medium-range active and passive sonar for superior submarine detection.
Andy Coxall, Delivery Director – Acquisition at BAE Systems Maritime Australia, emphasized the strategic importance of the Hunter class frigates. He stated, “These frigates are essential for safeguarding Australian shores and maintaining the accessibility of vital shipping lanes and undersea cables.” He recognized Ultra Maritime as a leader in anti-submarine warfare, affirming that its expertise forges next-generation naval capabilities that will better equip these warships to confront evolving security threats.
Additionally, the partnership with Australian suppliers like Ultra Maritime bolsters Australia’s sovereign defense capabilities. It simultaneously supports local industries, enhancing the national defense supply chain. Jonathan Sadleir, Vice President and General Manager of Ultra Maritime’s operations in Australia, expressed pride in contributing to the Royal Australian Navy’s mission of protecting ships and crews from torpedo threats. He underscored that this contract expands the deployment of Ultra Maritime’s pioneering anti-submarine technologies, which will also benefit a range of manned and unmanned vessels.
Moreover, Sadleir highlighted that Ultra Maritime is well-positioned to support future maritime initiatives under the AUKUS partnership, which aims to enhance security cooperation among Australia, the UK, and the US. The focus is on developing Australia’s sovereign undersea warfare capabilities, reinforcing national security in turbulent geopolitical contexts.
In summary, the collaboration between BAE Systems Maritime Australia and Ultra Maritime marks a significant advancement in Australia’s naval capabilities. The integration of the SSTD system into the Hunter class frigates not only strengthens operational readiness against underwater threats but also represents a vital investment in the nation’s security infrastructure.
