Indonesian Seafarer Becomes Chief Engineer of NYK LNG Carrier

On December 10, 2021, NYK Shipmanagement Pte. Ltd. made history by appointing Tabah Supriyanto as the first Indonesian chief engineer of an NYK LNG carrier. Supriyanto, who joined the NYK Group in 2008, has gained significant experience working on LNG carriers, culminating in this prestigious appointment. His new role involves overseeing the LNG carrier operations that support the Tangguh LNG project in Indonesia.

NYK has been committed to developing high-quality Indonesian seafarers since it began shipping for the Tangguh LNG project in 2008. The company initiated a long-term plan in 2014 to enhance domestic transportation capabilities in Indonesia. This plan emphasized the training and advancement of senior Indonesian seafarers, anticipating a surge in LNG transportation demand within the country.

Central to NYK’s strategy is the NYK Maritime College, a unique initiative that standardizes training requirements for seafarers, regardless of their nationality. This program aims to ensure that Indonesian seafarers are well-prepared for senior positions on complex and high-risk vessels. By fostering local talent in this specialized field, NYK is committed to not only meeting operational needs but also contributing to the development of Indonesia’s maritime workforce.

Supriyanto’s appointment represents a significant milestone not just for him, but also for the broader goal of empowering Indonesian professionals in the LNG sector, emphasizing NYK’s dedication to integrating local expertise into its operations.
