Nippon Yusen NYK, Japan’s leading shipping line, has expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of U.S. tariffs on consumer goods and cargo flows. In an interview, President Takaya Soga highlighted that while tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly the proposed 25% tariff on automobile imports, may not directly affect consumers, they ultimately bear the costs, leading to reduced demand and disrupting goods flow.
Soga pointed out that these tariffs would likely impact Japan’s export-dependent economy, noting that the consequences for shipping and logistics depend on actual cargo movements. Despite the challenges posed by the tariffs, he acknowledged possible benefits stemming from the ongoing trade war. During disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic, tariff-related procedural delays have led to tighter ship demand and increased freight rates, which could favor shipping companies.
Additionally, Soga mentioned an opportunity for NYK if China starts sourcing raw materials from outside the U.S., potentially generating new business avenues. He observed that while a surge in cargo movements occurred late last year due to anticipatory demands before the tariffs went into effect, there has been little change in material flows since the tariffs were implemented.
The U.S. has also proposed charging fees for docking at its ports for any vessels associated with Chinese manufacturing or flags, a move that could lead to broader implications in the shipping industry as allies may be pressured to follow suit. NYK remains cautious about altering its vessel orders from China amid this geopolitical landscape.
In light of ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, Soga noted the continued avoidance of the Red Sea due to security threats from Yemen’s Houthi militants, which has necessitated longer shipping routes.
On the logistics front, congestion issues in the Panama Canal have seen significant improvement, yet NYK is advocating for the reinstatement of Tier 1 priority for liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers to enhance operational efficiency.
Lastly, Soga highlighted that while NYK’s planned investments in vessels for offshore wind power projects in Japan might face delays due to slower market development, initiatives abroad would progress more swiftly.
