Kongsberg Digital (KDI), a Norwegian firm, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Maritime Industry Authority in the Philippines (MARINA), marking a pivotal moment for maritime education and training in the Philippines. The MOU, signed by KDI’s Senior Vice President Morten Hasaas and VAdm Robert A. Empedrad (Ret), the head of MARINA, focuses on integrating advanced simulation technologies into maritime training systems, emphasizing the need for safety, cost efficiency, and sustainability.
KDI highlighted that their suite of simulation systems will enhance the skill building necessary for both maritime students and crew, ultimately contributing to a more knowledgeable and competent workforce. This collaboration aims to integrate innovative practices within the maritime sector, elevating the Philippines’ status as a significant player in the global maritime industry, which is noted for having the largest number of seafarers worldwide.
Under this partnership, KDI will lend its expertise in simulation studies that cover emerging areas such as autonomous shipping, digital twins, and vessel insights. These technologies are expected to support MARINA’s aspirations outlined in the Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP) by enhancing operational methodologies and developing efficient training tools.
