Firefighters douse a fire at the Post Office building in Manila on May 22, 2023.

Historic Philippine Post Office Building Destroyed by Fire

A significant fire broke out late on Sunday at the historic Manila Central Post Office, a landmark in the Philippine capital, resulting in extensive damage. Over 80 fire trucks were mobilized by the Bureau of Fire Protection to combat the flames, which sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky and took more than seven hours to bring under control. According to postmaster-general Luis Carlos, the fire consumed the building entirely, damaging all parts from the basement to the fifth floor.

The Manila Central Post Office, originally constructed in 1926, held historical significance and was once regarded as one of the grandest buildings in Manila. It had endured destruction during World War II but was rebuilt in 1946. The National Museum of the Philippines recognized it as an “important cultural property” in 2018. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and while the incident resulted in one volunteer firefighter suffering minor injuries, the loss extends beyond physical damage; items stored within, including letters, parcels, and the postal agency’s complete stamp collection, are likely lost.

Efforts to extinguish the fire involved the collaboration of fire brigades from various parts of the capital, underscoring the scale and urgency of the response. The destruction of such a key cultural site raises concerns about the preservation of heritage and the impact on the community reliant on its services. As investigations continue, officials are focusing on understanding how this disaster occurred and what steps can be taken in the future to prevent similar incidents.
