The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) have reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration through a renewed Multi-Year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This renewed partnership aims to enhance various aspects of the maritime sector, including research and development, talent cultivation, workforce upskilling, support for startup maritime ventures, and regulatory alignment. Signed recently, this comprehensive agreement seeks to bolster Singapore’s status as a global maritime hub and align with ABS’ strategic initiatives in the region.
A key component of this five-year collaboration is the establishment of the ABS Singapore Maritime Safety Centre, a state-of-the-art facility designed to offer immersive training for maritime professionals and seafarers. Supporting the MPA’s Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF), ABS is investing USD $4.5 million into this center, which is expected to create new employment opportunities in the region.
The ABS Singapore Maritime Safety Centre plans to utilize advanced training methodologies, including virtual reality (VR) and game-based training systems, enabling realistic simulations of training scenarios. This approach allows trainees to experience various complexities without endangering the vessel or crew, significantly enhancing safety during training.
At the center, maritime professionals and students will gain knowledge and skills in safe practices for handling alternative fuels, such as ammonia and methanol, as well as understanding battery and electric propulsion systems. This modern training approach is crucial as the industry moves towards sustainability.
Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman and CEO, emphasized that the transition to net-zero within the maritime industry requires not only innovative technology but also a skilled workforce capable of safely implementing these advancements. He highlighted the organization’s commitment to supporting research and development and nurturing talent through this partnership with MPA. He noted that Singapore’s leadership in maritime sustainability positions it as an ideal collaborator in this endeavor.
Similarly, Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, reiterated the significance of the renewed MOU with ABS, stating it reflects their shared vision for a sustainable and future-ready maritime sector. By combining expertise in research, development, and workforce training, the partnership aims to fortify Singapore’s role as a global hub for maritime innovation.
