Austal Vietnam Unveils New High-Speed Catamaran for French Polynesia

Austal Vietnam has recently launched a new high-speed catamaran, the Apetahi Express, for the Degage Group, which will enter service between Pape’ete (Tahiti) and Vaitape (Bora Bora) in French Polynesia in July 2023. This vessel, measuring 66 meters in length, is currently undergoing final fit-out and is expected to begin sea trials this month, with delivery anticipated in June 2023.

The Apetahi Express, designated Austal Hull 425, is the third ship constructed at Austal’s Vung Tau shipyard since its inauguration in 2018. This new design emphasizes efficiency and flexibility, featuring multiple decks for passengers and significant cargo space that can accommodate up to 16 tonnes, making it suitable for high-speed inter-island transportation. Austal Limited CEO Paddy Gregg highlighted the excitement of the Degage Group, who have previously purchased five ferries from Austal, about adding this superior vessel to their fleet.

Apetahi Express can carry 574 passengers across two decks, plus an additional 80 on an external sun deck. The crew quarters include seven two-berth cabins and two single-berth cabins, enhancing comfort for operators. Designed for functionality, it is equipped with four passenger access ramps and boasts a cargo-loading system supported by two cranes.

In terms of performance, the catamaran is powered by four diesel engines and four waterjets, equipped with Austal’s advanced motion control system featuring active interceptors and T-foils. It achieves a contracted top speed of 35.8 knots and has a range of up to 360 nautical miles, with extended capacity due to a long-range tank. The vessel incorporates Austal’s latest MARINELINK-Connect technology, which facilitates enhanced operational connectivity.

Mark Dummett, president of Austal Vietnam, praised his team’s efforts in delivering the Apetahi Express, recognizing their hard work and the relationship with the Degage Group. The vessel is anticipated to set a new standard in ferry service in the region, enhancing transportation options in the beautiful waters of French Polynesia.
