Belgium-based Zulu Associates, along with its subsidiary Anglo Belgian Shipping Company, is making significant strides in developing an uncrewed, zero-emission cross-channel vessel named the ZULU Mass. This innovative project aims to reshape the logistics chain by promoting autonomous and environmentally friendly shipping solutions. In collaboration with Lloyd’s Register (LR), the design has achieved Approval in Principle (AiP), marking a pivotal step toward advancing the use of sustainable technologies in shipping.
The ZULU Mass vessel is designed to accommodate 200 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) and is powered by a 650kW electric propulsion motor. This motor can operate using various renewable energy sources, including hydrogen, ammonia, or methanol through either a fueled engine and generator or a fuel cell. Additionally, the vessel can also run on battery power. The Anglo Belgian Shipping Company is exploring further possibilities, including alternative propulsion systems such as wind and foils, to enhance the vessel’s efficiency.
With a length of 328 feet, the ZULU Mass aims to operate autonomously in the English Channel and the North Sea as a zero-emissions cargo carrier. Especially noteworthy is that LR recognizes this vessel to be one of the first short-sea vessels to incorporate these advanced operating capabilities. While similar projects have been launched in Norway focusing on transporting containers within fjords or coastal waters, the ZULU Mass broadens the scope to encompass cross-channel operations, showcasing its potential for greater logistical impact.
Mike Holliday, the UK & Ireland Area Manager for Lloyd’s Register, emphasized the design’s importance for the future of autonomous shipping both in Europe and worldwide. He stated that the approval from LR not only reinforces the commitment to advancing digitalization in the maritime sector but also underlines the need for decarbonization.
The AiP awarded by Lloyd’s Register comes after a thorough evaluation of the ZULU Mass’s design against industry standards. The focus is on innovative developments in the marine components of logistic chains, highlighting Zulu Associates’ role in striving for a sustainable future in shipping.
