Beachgoers Form Human Chain to Rescue Swimmer from Riptide

On November 30, 2023, at Glenmore Beach in Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal, a young man faced a life-threatening situation when he became caught in a strong rip current around 3 PM. Lacking lifeguards—who only work weekends and were set to start daily deployments on December 15—local beachgoers stepped in to save him, showcasing extraordinary bravery and community spirit.

According to Craig Lambinon from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the rescue involved three swimmers and at least 50 other beachgoers. Utilizing NSRI’s Pink Rescue Buoys, two beachgoers—a 20-year-old and a 16-year-old—initially braved the turbulent surf to reach the drowning man. They were later aided by a former lifeguard, illustrating the power of collaboration in emergencies.

To assist in the rescue, other beachgoers formed a human chain, stretching from the shore into the choppy waters, enhancing the effort to bring the man safely to the beach. Terri Burger, secretary of the Umtamvuna Surf Lifesaving Club, noted that while Glenmore Beach is generally suitable for swimming, it can also present perilous rip currents that challenge even experienced swimmers.

The NSRI Port Edward’s duty crew was alerted to the situation at approximately 3 PM. Fortunately, a nearby fishing club recorded the incredible rescue, capturing the determination and heroic actions of those involved. The young man was subsequently treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms at a hospital and was later discharged.

Lambinon praised the beachgoers, stating, “Bystanders have gone beyond the extra mile.” The incident served as a poignant reminder of the importance of community vigilance and readiness in crises, especially in areas without immediate professional safety services. The collective response of ordinary citizens not only saved a life but also highlighted the remarkable capacity for humanity and heroism in the face of danger.
