Seafarers, OFWs honored on maritime awareness month

Celebrating Seafarers and OFWs During Maritime Awareness Month

During the observance of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) this September, Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac paid tribute to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and seafarers, recognizing them as vital representatives of the Philippines’ maritime strength and archipelagic identity. Cacdac emphasized that these modern-day heroes carry not only their skills and resilience but also the “strength of our nation and the hope of your communities.”

Cacdac acknowledged the immense sacrifices made by Filipino workers, including enduring long separations from their families and overcoming the demanding conditions associated with sea and overseas jobs. He affirmed that such sacrifices should be met with dignity, protection, and opportunities for improvement.

This year’s MANA Mo theme, “Nagkakaisang Kapuluan, Panatag na Karagatan” (United Archipelago, Secure Ocean), highlights the collective responsibility of Filipinos to protect and preserve the country’s maritime resources and heritage. According to Cacdac, this observance serves as a reminder to all Filipinos of their shared duty to care for the seas, honor their cultural heritage, and unite as a maritime nation.

Furthermore, Cacdac assured that the Department of Migrant Workers will continue to provide necessary protections and support for OFWs and their families. He called for unity in building a resilient archipelago and ensuring a secure ocean, aimed at fostering a stronger, prouder, and more progressive maritime Philippines.

In summary, this observance not only recognizes the crucial role of seafarers and migrant workers in the Filipino identity but also calls for collective efforts to safeguard the nation’s maritime heritage and support the hardworking individuals who contribute to the economy and the community.
