The Philippine Coast Guard was escorting aid-distributing boats for local fishermen when a collision occurred involving a China Coast Guard ship and a larger vessel, identified as the PLA Navy warship. Commodore Jay Tarriela, the spokesman for the Philippine Coast Guard, described the event as the result of a risky maneuver by the Chinese vessel, CCG 3104, which was engaging the Filipino ship, BRP Suluan, at high speed. The collision caused significant damage to the CCG vessel, rendering it unseaworthy.
This incident is part of an ongoing pattern of confrontations within the South China Sea, a region that China claims almost entirely, despite international rulings disputing these claims. The Scarborough Shoal has long been a flashpoint since China’s seizure of the area from the Philippines in 2012. Approximately 60% of global maritime trade flows through this contested waterway, amplifying the strategic importance of conflicts taking place there.
During the confrontation, the Philippine vessel was reportedly targeted with a water cannon by the Chinese ship but successfully evaded the attack. Notably, the crew of the Chinese vessel did not respond when offered assistance by the Filipino ship.
In a broader context of regional tensions, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos has expressed concerns regarding a potential conflict over Taiwan, noting that such a war would likely involve the Philippines due to its geographic proximity. Marcos highlighted the country’s stakes in Taiwan, where many Filipinos work, and stressed the necessity of preparing for the possibility of being drawn into a major conflict. His warnings prompted a diplomatic protest from Beijing, which accused him of provocation.
Since taking office in 2022, President Marcos has bolstered ties with the U.S., a key ally with a mutual defense treaty, amid rising tensions with China.
