On Monday, a significant maritime incident occurred in the South China Sea involving a collision between a Chinese navy vessel and a China Coast Guard ship while chasing a Philippine patrol boat. This confrontation took place near the Scarborough Shoal, a disputed area long claimed by both the Philippines and China. The Philippine Coast Guard was escorting aid-distributing boats for local fishermen when the incident unfolded, leading to the release of dramatic video footage showing the collision.
According to Philippine Coast Guard spokesman, Commodore Jay Tarriela, the collision involved the China Coast Guard vessel CCG 3104, which was pursuing the Philippine ship BRP Suluan at high speed. The aggressive maneuver performed by the Chinese vessel resulted in a loud crash, significantly damaging the forecastle of the CCG vessel and rendering it unseaworthy. While the Philippine side provided details about the event, a Chinese coast guard spokesperson, Gan Yu, acknowledged the confrontation but did not mention the collision itself. He stated that necessary measures were taken to control and deter Philippine vessels in accordance with the law.
The incident marks yet another episode in the escalating tensions between the Philippines and China over territorial disputes in the South China Sea, which is vital for global maritime trade, with over 60% of it passing through this strategic waterway. The region has been a flashpoint, especially since China seized control of Scarborough Shoal from the Philippines in 2012, despite an international ruling that nullifies China’s expansive claims in the area.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos addressed the incident during a news conference, asserting that the country’s patrol vessels would maintain a presence in the disputed waters to assert Manila’s sovereign rights. He emphasized that the Philippines would continue defending what it considers its own territory.
While it remains unclear if there were any injuries resulting from Monday’s incident, Tarriela indicated that the Chinese crew did not respond to an offer of assistance from the Filipino ship following the collision. Earlier in the encounter, the BRP Suluan had successfully evaded an attempt from the Chinese vessel to target it with a water cannon.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing and increasingly perilous interactions between Chinese and Philippine maritime forces, further complicating an already tense geopolitical situation in the region.
