Enhancing Maritime Security for Africa’s Free Trade Agenda – Julius Debrah

Julius Debrah, chief of staff to Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, emphasized the need for African countries to collaborate on maritime security during the 4th Annual International Maritime Defense Exhibition and Conference (IMDEC) in Accra. He argued that collective action among navies, international partners, the private sector, and civil society is essential for securing the maritime zone, which is vital to advancing Africa’s free trade agenda.

Debrah highlighted that a robust and secure maritime environment is crucial for the success of Africa’s economic initiatives, specifically referencing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He called for strong political will from top leadership to ensure effective collaboration and implementation of strategies aimed at maritime security.

In support of these initiatives, Ghana seeks to enhance its port facilities and develop its industrial corridors, positioning itself as West Africa’s leading trade and investment hub. This would facilitate better connectivity for local businesses and open up new opportunities within the framework of the AfCFTA.

The IMDEC 2025 serves as a significant platform for maritime defense efforts in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond, gathering African and international naval forces, as well as key stakeholders. It aims to foster cooperation, share best practices, and address common challenges in maritime security.

Debrah’s remarks underscore the critical importance of regional cooperation in maritime security, which not only protects the maritime domain but also supports economic growth and stability across the continent. The successful implementation of these strategies will be pivotal in the realization of Africa’s free trade objectives, ensuring a secure and prosperous future for the region.
