The Gaza Government Media Office has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s interception of the Handala aid ship, labeling it an act of “maritime piracy.” This event marks a significant escalation in tensions surrounding humanitarian efforts in Gaza, where over 2.4 million Palestinians are experiencing severe deprivation due to an ongoing blockade. The media office emphasized that this action is a blatant violation of international law, reiterating that the Israeli occupation operates outside of legal constraints, targeting any humanitarian initiatives aimed at alleviating the suffering in Gaza.
In a statement, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Israeli navy intercepted the Handala while it was headed to Gaza. The ministry asserted that the ship was safely redirected to Israeli shores and the passengers were unharmed. However, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition accused the Israeli military of “abducting” the vessel’s crew, stating that the ship was violently intercepted in international waters approximately 40 nautical miles from Gaza. The coalition claimed all communications with the ship were cut off following the interception and described the aid on board as critical humanitarian supplies, including baby formula and medical provisions, aimed at alleviating the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians.
The Handala was carrying 21 civilians from 12 different countries, including a mix of parliamentarians, human rights defenders, labor organizers, and journalists. Several notable activists, including U.S. human rights attorney Huwaida Arraf and members of various European parliaments, were among those detained. The crew’s collective profile mirrors a diverse representation of global civil society committed to various humanitarian causes.
This incident is not isolated; it marks the third aggressive action by Israeli forces against Freedom Flotilla missions this year, previously including a drone attack on another aid ship and the illegal seizure of another vessel. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition highlighted that these ongoing assaults signify grave violations of international law, with the Israeli government disregarding a prior International Court of Justice mandate that calls for the facilitation of humanitarian aid access to Gaza.
In solidarity with the Handala mission, the Auckland-based organization Kia Ora Gaza has voiced its support for the humanitarian efforts against the siege imposed by Israel. Its spokesperson, Roger Fowler, expressed that all nations should take decisive actions to stop the ongoing genocide and occupation targeting the Palestinian people.
