Human Chain Rescues Drowning Man

On December 4, 2023, the Port Edward community in South Africa witnessed a remarkable act of bravery and solidarity when approximately 50 bystanders formed a human chain to assist in the rescue of a young man from drowning at Glenmore Beach. NSRI Port Edward Station 32 Commander, Gert du Plessis, detailed the extraordinary sequence of events surrounding this life-saving effort.

Upon receiving reports of a drowning incident, NSRI rescue swimmers and emergency services, including KZN Government Health EMS and the police, swiftly mobilized to the scene. When they arrived at the beach, they found that two local youths, Phakamani Ngeleka, 20, and Muqobi Ngeleka, 16, had already entered the water with two NSRI pink rescue buoys. These buoys played a crucial role in helping the 20-year-old victim stay afloat as they worked to bring him closer to shore.

Accompanying them was Sphiwe Mbele, a former lifeguard, who also ventured into the surf to offer assistance. As the trio struggled against the waves, they were joined by an impressive number of bystanders—teenagers and adults alike—who formed a human chain extending from the beach into the water. This human chain provided stability and support, ultimately enabling the rescuers to pull the casualty out of the surf and onto the beach safely.

According to eyewitness accounts, this collective effort was nothing short of heroic. Gert du Plessis expressed great admiration for the community’s quick response, emphasizing that both the human chain and the use of NSRI buoys were pivotal in saving the young man’s life. Thankfully, the victim was treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms and has since been released from the hospital.

The rescue serves as a prime example of community spirit and collective action in times of crisis. The residents of Port Edward demonstrated exceptional courage and solidarity, reminding us of the impact that individuals can have when they come together to help one another. Du Plessis noted that this incident was one of many successful rescues over the weekend, highlighting the importance of beach safety, especially as the holiday season approaches.

The initiative aligns with a broader mission to encourage community involvement and awareness surrounding safety while enjoying coastal activities. For those looking for safety tips for beach outings, resources are readily available.

In reflection, the Port Edward community can take immense pride in the caliber of its residents, who showcased immense bravery and support during a critical moment. The incident underscores a central theme: the power of unity and the incredible impact of collective efforts in ensuring safety and recovery in emergency situations.
