The India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025, held from October 27 to 31, showcased India’s commitment to maritime advancement under the theme “Uniting Oceans, One Maritime Vision.” Organized by the Indian Ports Association (IPA) and hosted by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), the event took place at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Mumbai and was inaugurated by Union Minister Amit Shah.
The IMW 2025 attracted over 100,000 participants from 85 countries, including more than 500 exhibitors and 350 speakers. Significant Indian dignitaries were present, such as Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Shantanu Thakur, and several Chief Ministers from Indian states. Additionally, global leaders from nations like Antigua and Barbuda, Liberia, and Saudi Arabia participated, promoting international cooperation in maritime governance.
Key events during IMW included the 4th Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS), the 2nd Sagarmanthan on marine ecology, and Green Maritime Day, aimed at advancing sustainable maritime practices. The GMIS focused on bringing together vital stakeholders—governments, investors, and industry leaders—to exchange innovative ideas and promote reforms. The 2nd Sagarmanthan emphasized discussions on blue economy sustainability and climate resilience.
One of the significant highlights was Green Maritime Day (GMD), during which discussions centered on sustainable shipping and reducing maritime pollution through innovative solutions. In addition, the UNESCAP Asia-Pacific Regional Dialogue convened regional stakeholders to enhance maritime connectivity.
The IMW showcased India’s ambitious initiatives including a Rs.2.2 lakh crore investment plan aimed at bolstering the nation’s maritime infrastructure. Key highlights included the launch of the “Bharat Container Shipping Line” with 51 vessels, a fleet expansion plan by the Shipping Corporation of India, and the introduction of the Green Tug Programme aimed at reducing emissions through eco-friendly technology.
Moreover, significant awards were distributed at the Maritime Excellence Achievers Awards ceremony, recognizing achievements in various categories, such as Terminal Operational Excellence and Maritime Education. Notably, the Deendayal Port Authority and Paradip Port Authority were awarded for their innovation and sustainability efforts.
The event culminated with the unveiling of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) logo, symbolizing India’s rich maritime heritage. The NMHC, under development in Lothal, Gujarat, is set to be a cultural and educational hub for showcasing India’s maritime history.
IMW 2025 aligns with broader strategic visions—the Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV) 2047—focusing on digital and sustainable port-led growth. With a coastline of approximately 11,000 km, accounting for 60% of India’s GDP, initiatives from IMW are projected to dramatically enhance India’s global maritime competitiveness and facilitate sustainable development in the region.
