India has reported that 20 Indian-flagged vessels with approximately 540 Indian seafarers are currently operating in the western Persian Gulf, a region marked by high tensions. Despite international concerns, the government has confirmed that all crew members are safe, and no incidents involving Indian ships have occurred in the past 24 hours.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has implemented necessary measures to ensure the safety of these vessels and their crews. Monitoring of the ships is being conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping in collaboration with ship owners, recruitment agencies, and Indian missions abroad. This proactive surveillance, driven by escalating regional tensions, is ongoing to ensure the well-being of the seafarers.
In the last 24 hours alone, the government has successfully repatriated over 938 Indian seafarers, including 25 recent returns. Meanwhile, port operations across India remain uninterrupted, with maritime boards in states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry reporting smooth functioning without congestion.
The Ministry of External Affairs is actively in contact with Indian missions in the region to provide support and safety advisories to citizens. Since February 28, around 497,000 passengers have returned to India from the affected areas in West Asia, showcasing the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its nationals abroad.
On the same day, two merchant vessels carrying petroleum products for India were expected to transit through the Strait of Hormuz, despite the ongoing tensions that have affected maritime operations in the area. The Indian Navy has proactively deployed warships near strategic ports and key maritime locations to assist vessels when necessary.
Ongoing vigilance is a priority for the government as it continues to closely monitor the situation in the Gulf and West Asia. The safety and welfare of Indian seafarers and citizens remain at the forefront of government efforts, with a firm commitment to safeguard their interests during these precarious times.
