The All India Seafarer & General Worker Union has raised urgent concerns regarding DGS Circular 31 of 2025, which they claim is adversely impacting the employment of Indian seafarers. The union formally appealed to the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), urging them to reconsider and revoke the circular due to widespread distress and potential job losses among the seafaring community.
In a recent communication addressed to Shri Shyam Jagannathan, the Director General of Shipping, the union reported an influx of over 500 emails and formal grievances from seafarers across the country. These communications highlight a pervasive anxiety regarding reduced job opportunities stemming from the implementation of the circular. Abhijeet Sangle, the Working President of the union, emphasized that the circular is causing significant job losses and uncertainty, urging authorities to act swiftly in revoking it to protect the livelihoods of Indian seafarers and their families.
