The Indonesian government is enhancing international collaboration in maritime training by organizing a program for sailors from 13 member countries of the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA). Head of the Transportation Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDMP), Djarot Tri Wardono, highlighted that this initiative includes a Training of Trainers (ToT) program based on International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.
Djarot emphasized that this effort goes beyond merely enhancing maritime human resource capabilities; it reflects Indonesia’s commitment to fostering cross-border relationships in maritime cooperation. The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s participation in the IMO forum, focusing on South-South cooperation and triangulated partnerships.
Eighty-four participants, carefully selected from MOWCA nations including Cameroon, Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal, are participating in this training. There will be a follow-up batch with an additional 48 participants slated to begin training on October 19, 2025. The training aims to equip participants with the skills to become professional coaches and maritime testers according to IMO standards, utilizing internationally recognized simulators and a comprehensive curriculum.
Djarot underscored the financial backing for this program, with 18 billion Rupiah allocated for the two training batches. This funding supports both the training of trainers and expert training programs, facilitating their development as educators and judges in the maritime field.
Acknowledging the importance of financial support, Djarot expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Finance for their trust in the agency’s management of these funds, further solidifying Indonesia’s role in providing quality training to maritime professionals from West and Central Africa.
Through initiatives like this, Indonesia aims to enhance its maritime diplomacy, contributing not only to its own maritime workforce but also to global shipping stability and safety. Djarot reiterated that the ultimate goal is to strengthen Indonesia’s standing within the international maritime community and to act as a collaborative partner in various maritime activities.
