Eng. Yasser Zaghloul, CEO of the National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC), recently discussed the company’s continuous growth and its strategic vision during an interview with Marasi News. Established over four decades ago, NMDC has positioned itself as a leading player in marine dredging, drilling, and construction, delivering high-quality services while meeting international standards. Zaghloul emphasized the importance of NMDC’s extensive experience and skilled workforce in achieving its current status as one of the world’s top marine dredging companies.
To maintain its competitive edge, NMDC has focused on diversifying its project portfolio and improving its operational structure. This includes significant financial investments aimed at enhancing their infrastructure and service quality. Despite facing challenges in the maritime sector, the company plans to undertake multimillion-dollar projects while striving to be the preferred local contractor and expanding its global presence.
Zaghloul highlighted several key projects, such as the recent completion of the complex Zakum project, which bolstered NMDC’s international reputation. The company has been involved in various governmental infrastructure initiatives in the UAE, including the expansion of Khalifa Port and several other projects totaling billions in value. NMDC’s international strategy also led to winning a notable $82 million project in the Maldives.
In 2018, NMDC experienced a 7% growth in revenue and a remarkable 25% increase in profits compared to the previous year, attributing this success to the collective efforts of its team amid challenging market conditions. The company also secured a significant AED5.1 billion contract for ADNOC’s Ghasha Concession project, which further solidifies its status in the industry and showcases ADNOC’s trust in NMDC’s capabilities.
Engaging in projects in Egypt, NMDC established the Egyptian Emirates Marine Dredging Company to leverage strong UAE-Egypt ties. The new entity has already secured six significant projects valued at AED1.46 billion, underlining the ongoing collaboration between the two nations.
Zaghloul stressed the importance of developing Emirati talent in the maritime sector, detailing NMDC’s commitment to training programs and mentorship for local professionals. These initiatives not only enhance individual skills but also align with the UAE’s broader Emiratization efforts.
Safety remains a cornerstone of NMDC’s operations, with health, safety, and environmental protocols prioritized across all projects. The company adopts rigorous safety standards and believes in investing in staff welfare.
Looking toward the future, Zaghloul sees Abu Dhabi as a pivotal hub for the maritime sector, with its strategic location and modern infrastructure pivotal in achieving the goals laid out in the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. With a focus on innovation and a strategic approach, NMDC aims to further strengthen its leadership position within the industry.
