A high-level delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) recently visited the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) in Mumbai to enhance bilateral cooperation in the maritime sector and gain insights into India’s maritime education and training framework. The discussions focused on key areas, including India’s examination system, maritime training courses, and the Comprehensive Inspection Programme (CIP)—an initiative that ensures quality compliance among the country’s maritime institutes.
The Japanese officials were particularly interested in India’s robust seafarer competency framework, which is internationally recognized for cultivating highly skilled and disciplined maritime professionals. This framework contributes significantly to the global supply of competent seafarers, and the delegation’s focus highlighted Japan’s increasing interest in tapping into India’s extensive and well-trained maritime workforce.
A major objective of the visit was to explore potential employment opportunities for Indian seafarers within Japan’s shipping industry. The delegation sought to identify top Indian maritime training institutions for possible collaboration and knowledge exchange, emphasizing a mutual interest in enhancing maritime human resource development.
