Marcos Emphasizes Importance of Filipino Seafarers in Global Trade

On the Day of Filipino Seafarers, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. praised the essential role that Filipino maritime workers play in global trade and maritime operations. Highlighting their discipline, skill, and commitment, he acknowledged the challenges they face, including the long periods spent away from home and the demanding nature of their work. In his address, Marcos emphasized that Filipino seafarers embody “quiet strength,” contributing significantly to the machinery of global trade and the journeys of vessels across oceans.

Marcos underscored a collective duty to enhance the welfare of these workers, stating that the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is committed to ensuring that seafarers are well-equipped, protected, and acknowledged for their contributions to the nation. He outlined MARINA’s mission, which focuses on policies that have a real impact, empowering training, and a vision that positions the maritime workforce as a vital global asset and a source of national pride.

The significance of Filipino seafarers is underscored by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), which reported the deployment of around 504,000 Filipino seafarers in 2024. Additionally, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas noted substantial remittances amounting to about US$6.94 billion from the sea-based sector in the same year, reflecting the economic importance of these workers.

Overall, the observance of the Day of Filipino Seafarers serves as a reminder of the dedication and sacrifices of these individuals, whose contributions are integral not only to global commerce but also to the livelihood and economy of the Philippines. The president’s acknowledgment reinforces the need for continued support and recognition, highlighting the value of Filipino seafarers on both a national and international level.
