Massachusetts Maritime Academy Cadets Shine in Intercollegiate Supply Chain Competition, Securing First and Third Place

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), renowned for its focus on science, engineering, technology, math, and business, recently achieved notable success in the 2024 Supply Chain Online Competition hosted by UMASS – Boston College of Management. Two student teams from MMA’s International Maritime Business Department earned first and third place in the competition, which featured 15 teams from nine universities, including prominent institutions like Babson College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

The first-place team consisted of Nicholas Lamattina from Groveland, Evan Presswood from South Dennis, and Richard Pagliuca from Saugus. Their success highlighted the effective application of theoretical knowledge and practical learning tools within a virtual business simulation environment. The third-place team, composed of Ryan Mackintire (Raynham), Thomas LaCourt (Weymouth), and Christian Winkler (Longmeadow), also displayed significant skill in navigating challenges typical of a real-world supply chain scenario.

Professor Paul Szwed guided both teams, emphasizing that the competition required participants to effectively manage various critical elements such as ordering, inventory, transportation, and capacity management amidst fluctuating seasonal demands over a simulated two-year period.

The recognition of these students was echoed by Dr. Bani Ghosh, chair of the International Maritime Business Department, who praised all participants for their remarkable efforts in this competitive arena. Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, the president of MMA, expressed pride in the students’ dedication and accomplishments, asserting that these victories reinforce the Academy’s commitment to excellence and its position as a leader in business education.

Founded over a century ago, MMA offers accredited Bachelor and Master of Science degrees and prepares students for rewarding careers both on land and at sea. Located in Cape Cod, the Academy provides a unique combination of a regimented lifestyle alongside a traditional four-year college experience, catering to students’ passions for the ocean and interest in fields such as math and science.
