The International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) has appointed Michael Achungwe Lugaje as its new Vice President, an announcement made on May 6, 2022. Lugaje, who serves as the Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA), was appointed following a vote of confidence from IAPH members in the African region. His extensive experience and educational background, which includes a Bachelor of Arts in French and Linguistics from the University of Ghana, a Master of Science in Maritime Affairs from the World Maritime University in Sweden, and an Executive MBA in Project and Strategic Management from France, have well-prepared him for this role.
Lugaje began his career in 1997 at the Port of Tema as a National Service Personnel, delivering French lessons to staff. Over the years, he has risen through various senior management positions at GPHA and gained significant exposure to the international ports sector in West and Central Africa. His roles have included being the Regional Coordinator for West and Central Africa at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and serving as Secretary-General of the Ports Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA).
Before his election as Vice President of IAPH, Lugaje had already engaged with the organization by contributing to initiatives aimed at raising its global profile, particularly concerning digitalization and decarbonization in the maritime sector. His election reflects a collaborative effort between IAPH’s African and European members, signifying a strategic approach to enhancing the organization’s influence.
Jens Meier, the former Vice President for Europe and CEO of Hamburg Port Authority, welcomed Lugaje, expressing confidence in his ability to elevate IAPH’s engagement. IAPH President Captain Subramaniam echoed this sentiment, noting Lugaje’s crucial contributions to initiatives like enhancing digitalization and port cybersecurity strategies.
