The Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) is actively seeking support from its 25 member states to back Nigeria in the upcoming International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Category C elections later this year. Dr. Paul Adalikwu, the Secretary-General of MOWCA, announced that the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has formally initiated this outreach, expressing confidence that member states will unite to bolster Nigeria’s candidacy.
Dr. Adalikwu highlighted the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to enhance Nigeria’s chances of reclaiming a seat in the IMO Category C, having last held this position in 2011. Despite Nigeria’s efforts in four subsequent elections, it has not succeeded in re-establishing its seat. “With the collective support of all critical stakeholders, we believe Nigeria has a solid chance to reclaim this seat,” he remarked, underscoring the significance of a consolidated bloc vote from MOWCA’s member countries.
In addition to the election efforts, Adalikwu addressed the pressing issue of harassment faced by seafarers. He affirmed that MOWCA is collaborating with international partners to promote the safety and welfare of maritime workers, specifically focusing on reducing harassment, particularly against women in the industry. Emphasizing MOWCA’s partnership with the IMO, he expressed that they are working diligently to ensure effective strategies are implemented to tackle these issues. “We are closely engaging with key stakeholders, especially the IMO in London, to put an end to this menace,” he concluded.
The organization’s dual focus on electoral support for Nigeria and the welfare of seafarers illustrates MOWCA’s commitment to enhancing maritime governance and safety in the region. With momentum building in these initiatives, there is cautious optimism for positive outcomes in both the upcoming elections and ongoing efforts to safeguard maritime workers.
