On February 14, 2024, the Tripartite Maritime Training Awards (TMTA) (Deck/Engine) programme was relaunched in Singapore at the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union’s Lunar New Year event, officiated by Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat and attended by NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng. This refreshed initiative, a collaboration between the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and NTUC’s e2i, aims to cultivate a skilled workforce by grooming 120 deck and engine officers, thereby reinforcing the Singapore Core of talent in the maritime industry.
Previously known as the Tripartite Nautical Training Award and Tripartite Engineering Training Award, the TMTA programme is designed to support both working adults transitioning into maritime careers and fresh graduates entering the industry. Since its inception in 2009, the TMTA has successfully trained over 400 cadets, producing more than 130 holders of the Certificate of Competency (COC). Graduates gain access to various opportunities at sea and ashore, contributing to Singapore’s status as a leading global maritime hub.
Wavelink Maritime Institute, the training arm of SMOU, will oversee the training of cadets, ensuring high-quality education tailored to meet industry demands. The next intake for the programme is scheduled for September 2024.
SMOU underscores its commitment to the future of Singapore’s maritime sector with over $10 million invested in the TMTA programme. The union plans to enhance the programme by forming partnerships that will expand financial support and practical training opportunities, ensuring that the curriculum evolves to meet the industry’s needs.
