The Philippines is actively engaged in a rescue operation for seafarers stranded in Ukraine due to the ongoing Russian invasion. So far, 21 Filipino mariners from the bulk carrier S-Breeze have been successfully evacuated, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Philippine Honorary Consul in Moldova and the Philippine Embassy in Budapest.
The S-Breeze had been docked at the Ilyichevsk shipyard in Odessa, Ukraine, for repairs since January 27. Although the crew was safe aboard the ship with sufficient provisions, they sought assistance for repatriation due to the dangers posed by the escalating conflict. In total, 27 Filipinos have been evacuated from Ukraine to Moldova so far, with plans underway to repatriate them to Manila as soon as possible.
Reports highlight the precarious situation faced by Filipino seafarers during the invasion. The crew of the S-Breeze is just one example among many affected; 21 crew members from the Namura Queen were recently reported to be in danger after their cargo ship was struck by rocket fire, while another 11 Filipinos aboard the Yasa Jupiter faced similar threats during the early days of the invasion.
The Philippines is the largest global supplier of seafarers, providing around 220,000 maritime workers for international shipping as of 2020, according to the Philippine Maritime Industry Authority (Marina). This highlights the critical role that Filipino seafarers play in the global maritime workforce, as well as the urgent need for safety measures and rescue operations during international crises.
In light of these emergencies, both the Philippine Embassy and consulates are facilitating prompt arrangements for the safe return of Filipino seafarers to their homeland, reflecting the government’s commitment to protect its citizens abroad amid growing international tensions.
