Marlink recently received type approval and cyber-security verification from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for its Internet of Things (IoT) data collection tool. This tool enables remote monitoring of fuel consumption and emissions, critical for enhancing vessel efficiency via satellite communications.
The certification from BV underscores that the onboard equipment complies with essential cyber security regulations, including standards from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Philippe Vaquer, BV’s cyber security manager, emphasized the increasing necessity for independent assessments of cyber risks relating to maritime systems, asserting that trusted third-party verification is essential for maintaining secure maritime supply chains and instilling confidence among stakeholders.
The data collected through Marlink’s system supports vessel operators in regulatory compliance, enhancing maintenance practices, and ensuring system uptime and vessel availability. Notably, the solution is vendor agnostic, allowing shipowners to gather data from equipment produced by any manufacturer. This flexibility enables comprehensive data collection, collating information from various sensors onboard vessels.
