In a significant initiative to enhance protections for Indian seafarers, representatives from the Shivsena Navik Sena Union (SNSU) recently met with the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) in Mumbai. The meeting, chaired by the Director General of Shipping, emphasized several pressing issues faced by the maritime community.
Key challenges highlighted during the session included the alarming abandonment of seafarers and an increase in fraud and cheating incidents perpetrated by Recruitment and Placement Services License (RPSL) agencies. The delegation also raised concerns about non-affiliated Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs) misleading candidates and illegal payments made to RPSL companies for employment opportunities. Additionally, the need for initiatives supporting and increasing the participation of women in the maritime sector was underscored.
Capt. Meena, the Deputy Director General (Crew), revealed ongoing efforts aimed at curbing these malpractices. Proposals to enhance RPSL bank guarantees and ensure stricter compliance were discussed, alongside moves toward implementing authentic digital sign-offs and integrating passport processes with Emigration and Form-1 systems. These measures aim to create a more secure and trustworthy recruitment environment for seafarers.
The SNSU delegation expressed their dedication to conducting seminars and awareness programs aimed at educating youth and seafarers about these challenges, helping empower them to navigate the maritime industry more effectively.
The DGS is committed to taking proactive steps to ensure that Indian seafarers are protected, well-informed, and empowered, thereby minimizing the risk of them falling victim to fraudulent practices. Through these initiatives, the Indian maritime community is expected to benefit significantly, fostering a safer and more transparent working environment for all seafarers.
