The accident involved a fast boat traveling from Nusa Penida that sank and ran aground near Sanur port, according to the island’s search and rescue agency. The head of the agency, I Nyoman Sidakarya, confirmed the fatalities and noted that a 23-year-old Indonesian passenger was still unaccounted for.
The boat was reportedly carrying 80 passengers, consisting of 73 foreign nationals, two Indonesians, and five crew members. Eyewitness accounts described the boat as overturned on a beach close to the Sanur port, drawing media attention to the scene of the accident. However, the rescue agency has not released detailed information regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the Chinese nationals.
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of maritime accidents in Indonesia, a vast archipelago consisting of around 17,000 islands. Such accidents often result from a combination of lax safety standards and challenging weather conditions. Just the previous month, a ferry heading to Bali from eastern Java sank, leading to the deaths of at least 19 people. In another incident in March, a boat with 16 passengers capsized in rough waters off Bali, resulting in one fatality and injuries to others.
The frequent occurrences of these maritime disasters highlight ongoing concerns about safety regulations and enforcement in Indonesia’s shipping industry. Since the country relies heavily on ferries and boats for inter-island transportation, calls for stricter safety measures and improved oversight have intensified among the public and authorities.
