Valenciaport Collaborates with Saggas to Enhance Renewable Gas Adoption in Maritime Industry

Saggas, a Spanish gas company, and the Port Authority of València (PAV) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaboration on projects related to renewable gases and CO2 management. This partnership focuses on identifying innovative projects that enhance storage, generation, and logistics for renewable gases, such as hydrogen and bioLNG, as well as for CO2. The intent is to utilize synergies with operations at the Sagunto regasification plant to achieve mutual goals.

A key objective of this collaboration is to address the decarbonization needs within the maritime and port sectors, including the logistics chain and its surrounding areas. This aligns with the increasing regulatory pressures from the European Green Pact and initiatives like the Fuel Maritime initiative and the regulation on the infrastructure for alternative fuels (AFIR).

The signing of the MoU underscores Saggas’ commitment to participating in the renewable gas and CO2 infrastructure sector, contributing to the energy transition plan spearheaded by the PAV. The Port of València is highly invested in sustainability and the 2030 Agenda, demonstrated through various projects. Among these is the H2PORTS initiative, which promotes the integration of green hydrogen into operational procedures. Similarly, the port has installed an electrical substation to allow vessels to connect to shore power while docked, reducing emissions from ships. Another significant project includes the installation of wind turbines for renewable energy generation.

Moreover, the PAV has reported that 42 private companies have voluntarily joined its environmental strategy, “Valenciaport 2030 Zero Emissions,” aimed at reaching net-zero emissions by 2030. This proactive stance was further illustrated last year when the port tested an electrically powered airship equipped with sensors to monitor environmental, security, and maritime traffic parameters.

Overall, the collaboration between Saggas and Valenciaport emphasizes a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability, ultimately aiming to contribute to a more sustainable maritime and logistics sector while complying with necessary environmental regulations.
