The Minister for Marine and Blue Economy is taking significant strides towards reforming Nigeria’s maritime sector, aiming to position it as a leading contributor to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Dr. Bolaji Akinola, the Special Adviser to the Minister on Media and Communications, emphasized this commitment during the commissioning of the National Secretariat of the Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) in Lagos.
Akinola described the minister as hard-working and focused, with a clear vision for enhancing the industry. He highlighted that mechanisms have been established to ensure optimal exploitation of the resources available within the marine and blue economy. The minister’s efforts are geared towards opening up the industry for the benefit of all Nigerians.
He also stressed the importance of media engagement, praising the media’s role in disseminating critical information regarding developments in the maritime sector. The ministry is dedicated to keeping stakeholders informed of industry changes, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and communication within the sector.
Rebecca Adamu, an Assistant Director at the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), commended SCAN for its objective reporting and its role in fostering industry growth. Similarly, Edward Osagie, the Head of Public Relations at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), recognized SCAN’s contributions, calling for continued collaboration in advancing the maritime industry.
Mr. Muyiwa Akande, from Sifax Group, reiterated the importance of maintaining strong relationships with the media, expressing gratitude for their ongoing support to both the firm and the broader maritime industry.
SCAN President Moses Ebosele presented the new secretariat as a vital press center for dialogues between members and stakeholders to address critical industry issues. He indicated that the association would initiate roundtable discussions with major industry players. Ebosele assured attendees that SCAN members are committed to upholding journalistic ethics and urged stakeholders to collaborate with them to find solutions to sector challenges.
Ebosele concluded by thanking Dr. Akinola for his support of the media, reaffirming SCAN’s dedication to aiding the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in its reform initiatives. The assembly collectively reinforced the notion that robust communication and collaboration are essential for the growth and advancement of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
