During the inauguration ceremony for the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at the Chinese Embassy in London, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez highlighted China’s vital role in enhancing global maritime cooperation and promoting sustainable development within the shipping industry. He emphasized that China is significantly involved in the maritime sector, being a leading player in shipbuilding and home to some of the world’s largest ports and shipping companies. Additionally, China is an essential provider of seafarers, contributing to various aspects of the maritime value chain.
Dominguez noted that China’s strengths could help the global maritime community attract a new generation of talent, enhancing the credibility of the industry in terms of safety, security, and sustainability. He expressed that China’s commitment is crucial for advancing these objectives and acknowledged the positive impact of the establishment of the Permanent Mission on China’s role within the IMO. The mission underscores China’s dedication to supporting the organization’s efforts in key areas such as digitalization, decarbonization, safety improvements, diversity and inclusion, and seafarer training.
The IMO, a specialized United Nations agency, is tasked with ensuring the safety and security of shipping while preventing marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. With 176 member countries, China has been a significant member of the IMO Council since 1989, classified as a Category A member. Dominguez expressed optimism for China’s ongoing involvement and support in sharing experience and knowledge within the IMO framework, ultimately contributing to enhanced global maritime safety and sustainability efforts.
