Amid rising tensions in West Asia, the Indian Navy has significantly increased its presence near the Gulf of Oman to enhance maritime security and protect Indian-flagged vessels. This initiative comes in response to concerns over global energy security, as Indian tankers continue to navigate the crucial Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for energy supplies.
Under the Indian Navy’s “mission-based deployment” framework, which has been operational since 2017, a continuous naval presence has been maintained in various maritime regions, including the Gulf of Oman. Initially, the Navy stationed one warship in the region, but due to the current security climate, this number has been raised to three, with plans for further increases. These warships are tasked with escorting Indian-flagged ships through sensitive maritime routes and ensuring their safe passage to Indian ports. Notably, vessels like the Shivalik, Nanda Devi, and Jag Ladki have successfully reached Indian ports, underscoring the effectiveness of naval escorts.
Currently, 22 Indian vessels are reported to be operating west of the Strait of Hormuz, indicating a significant level of maritime activity in the area. In addition, two key naval operations are ongoing: “Operation Sankalp” focuses on ensuring the safety of merchant shipping in the Gulf of Oman, while an anti-piracy mission is underway in the Gulf of Aden.
At an inter-ministerial press conference, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the Navy’s commitment to maritime security, particularly through anti-piracy operations. He indicated that more detailed operational insights would be provided by the Ministry of Defence.
The Navy’s deployment strategy also encompasses other sensitive maritime regions, such as near Seychelles for securing vessels traversing the Cape of Good Hope route, and around the Maldives, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as the Bay of Bengal near the Myanmar-Bangladesh maritime boundary. During these operations, Indian naval ships engage in joint exercises with allied navies and provide humanitarian assistance and rescue operations in response to piracy incidents or maritime accidents.
This multifaceted approach underscores India’s commitment to ensuring safe passage for its vessels and protecting its maritime interests in a critical region facing increasing geopolitical uncertainties. The Indian Navy’s strategic enhancements in the Gulf of Oman reflect a proactive stance to maintain security and facilitate international maritime commerce amid challenging circumstances.
