The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs is set to convene today, October 21, to address significant capital and infrastructure challenges confronting Ireland’s fishing ports and harbours. Scheduled for 11 am in Committee Room 2 at Leinster House, the meeting will be divided into two sessions to accommodate various stakeholders vested in port management, safety, and fisheries operations.
In the first session, commencing at 11 am, representatives from several key organizations will share their insights. These include the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), which plays a crucial role in maritime safety and rescue operations, and the Seafood Ireland Alliance, which focuses on promoting the interests of the seafood sector. Also participating will be the Irish Islands Marine Resource Organisation (IIMRO), dedicated to advocating for sustainable fishing practices, and the National Inshore Fishermen’s Association (NIFA), representing the interests of inshore fishermen.
Following a break, the second session is slated to begin at 12:20 pm. This segment will feature representatives from the County and City Management Association (CCMA), who will discuss the local governance perspectives on managing fishing ports and related infrastructure. Officials from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) will also contribute, providing insights into government policies and support mechanisms affecting the fishing industry.
The discussions are anticipated to cover a wide array of topics, including the current state of the infrastructure at fishing ports, safety protocols, and the overall impact on the fisheries sector. The Committee aims to address these critical issues to enhance the operational efficiency and safety of Ireland’s fishing harbours, which are vital to the nation’s economy and food supply.
