The Ecumenical Maritime Ministry of India recently held a two-day workshop aimed at enhancing the welfare efforts for seafarers in collaboration with esteemed organizations, including the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (India), ISWOT Seafarers’ Welfare Organization, and CEFI. This initiative brought together Port Chaplains, welfare officers, and ship welfare visitors from various denominations across the nation, all committed to improving pastoral and humanitarian care for seafarers visiting Indian ports.
The workshop featured notable speakers, including Capt. Daniel Joseph, Deputy Director General of Shipping for the Government of India. He provided an insightful presentation on the roles of international and national organizations dedicated to seafarers’ welfare, highlighting critical frameworks like the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006. His talk underscored the legislative backdrop vital for safeguarding seafarers’ rights and well-being.
Additionally, the Chairman of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (India) addressed the attendees, emphasizing the significance of protecting seafarers’ rights against potential challenges. Dr. N. Reuben Paul elaborated on the responsibilities of welfare officers and Port Welfare Committees during critical scenarios such as vessel detentions and crew distress situations. His contributions highlighted the need for compassionate, coordinated responses to ensure the dignity and protection of seafarers in vulnerable circumstances.
Fr. A. Balasamy enriched the program by tracing the history of maritime welfare in India, discussing its pivotal milestones and emphasizing the enduring significance of the ILO Maritime Labour Convention in promoting international welfare standards for seafarers. The event’s chief guest, Honourable Judge Jayanthi Isaac, added further importance to the workshop, reinforcing the role of maritime welfare within the context of human rights and labor justice.
Dr. Babu Mailan and Dr. Jeslin spotlighted the practical outreach initiatives by the Indian Seafarers’ Welfare Organization at major ports, focusing on addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of seafarers. In a related session, Dr. Sam Benjamin addressed the legal and occupational challenges faced by seafarers and the welfare officers who assist them, providing valuable insights into maritime law.
The workshop concluded with a significant appointment: CEFI Diocese Chairman D.P. Noha was named the National Coordinator for the Ecumenical Maritime Ministry of India. In his acceptance speech, Noha expressed gratitude to the participating organizations and reiterated his dedication to fostering the ministry’s mission. He emphasized the importance of compassionate care for seafarers from various national backgrounds, ensuring they receive support both at sea and in port.
