ATPI: PH remains key source of seafarers

PH Continues to Lead as Top Source of Seafarers

The Philippines has solidified its position as a premier source of seafarers globally, attributed to its pool of English-proficient and highly skilled maritime professionals, as highlighted by ATPI Philippines president Yvette Araullo. The demand for Filipino seafarers has seen a consistent rise, particularly in sectors such as offshore energy, short-sea container trade, and passenger vessels. Araullo projects a growth rate of 5% to 7% annually over the next 12 to 18 months, emphasizing the importance of strategic investments in technology, airline partnerships, and local infrastructure to meet this increasing demand.

The BIMCO/International Chamber of Shipping Seafarer Workforce Report 2024 estimates approximately 1.89 million seafarers are currently onboard merchant ships trading internationally. This workforce consists of about 857,540 officers and 1,035,180 ratings, responsible for vital deck and engine room duties. These dynamics are reshaping the deployment of Filipino seafarers globally, highlighting the necessity for enhanced digitalization and operational efficiency in marine operations.

Given its abundance of skilled maritime workers, the Philippines remains vital for ATPI’s international marine operations. The company aims to address rising demand through improved data visibility, flexible travel solutions, and stronger partnerships with global airlines and marine agencies. In addition, ATPI has enhanced its marine infrastructure in key transit areas and fortified airline collaborations to ensure timely crew changes.

A key component of ATPI’s commitment to the Philippines is the establishment of the World Support Center (WSC) in Manila. This facility, operational around the clock, offers a comprehensive range of travel management services. It signifies a significant investment in Filipino talent while enhancing operational capabilities through innovative services, dynamic partnerships, and sustainability initiatives.

Araullo underscores that ATPI’s strategic partnership with the marine industry allows them to leverage technology, global reach, and operational expertise to reinforce the Philippines as a crucial hub in maritime logistics. The ongoing growth and investment by ATPI signal a promising future for Filipino seafarers and the broader maritime industry in the Philippines.
