The Supply Chain and Logistics Technology (SCLT) program at the University of Houston, in collaboration with the Houston Maritime Center (HMC), honored Ernest Moniz, former Secretary of Energy, for his significant contributions to the energy transition. Moniz received the Maritime Education in Energy Transition award during the renowned CERAWeek, which is a major forum for discussions within the energy industry.
Margaret Kidd, the Program Director for SCLT, expressed that Moniz serves as an inspirational figure for Houston, often referred to as the “Global Energy capital of the world.” She highlighted that his commitment to energy transition aligns closely with the objectives of both the SCLT program and the HMC, particularly in workforce development and advancements within the oil, gas, and maritime sectors.
Moniz has an extensive background in energy technology and public service. He held various significant positions, including serving under the Clinton Administration and as the Secretary of Energy from 2013 to 2017 during the Obama Administration. After his tenure, he founded the Energy Futures Initiative, a non-profit organization focused on promoting technological innovations in industry policy and business models aimed at driving the energy transition forward. Recently, the initiative launched the Labor Energy Partnership, designed to further accelerate this transition.
The Houston Maritime Center, established by Jim Manzolillo in 1999, is a non-profit organization focused on educating the public about Houston’s critical role in the national maritime industry. It serves as a resource and educational hub for maritime activities, fostering connections between the industry and the local community. With a mission to “Inspire Knowledge of the Maritime World,” the HMC aims to preserve Houston’s maritime history while enlightening future generations about this essential sector.
