Recent incidents highlight these challenges. Notably, the MV Wan Hai 503 caught fire on June 9 while about 44 nautical miles off the Azhikkal coast in Kannur, Kerala. This incident prompted immediate attention from the Indian Coast Guard and Navy, as the ship’s cargo included over 140 containers filled with hazardous materials. Despite successful control of the fire, which produced varying smoke colors indicative of different burning substances, the vessel drifted perilously towards the coast amid rough monsoon conditions.
During the emergency, a tow rope attempted to stabilize the ship but snapped, necessitating the use of a steel wire rope deployed by a navy helicopter. Ultimately, the ship was towed to deeper waters, alleviating the immediate danger it posed to the coastline. Although the fire hotspots remain, the focus has shifted to the vessel’s owner for salvage operations.
